Because of the ever-increasing demand for health care professionals at every skill level, certified nursing assistants have become more important than ever before for efficient, effective patient care. From hospitals to nursing homes to home health care, the nursing assistant is an essential element in ensuring that patients’ basic needs are met and that over-worked doctors and nurses have the time they need to focus on each patient’s overall health care. has become one of the fastest growing methods for educating aspiring nursing assistants and meeting the health care system’s demand for these patient care specialists.

For many students whose lives leave little time for traditional class room educations, is the perfect alternative. Designed to prepare students to take and pass their state’s relevant certification exam, courses enable these busy students to receive their education and begin their career as nursing assistants. An additional benefit to online course work is that negates the need for some students to relocate or commute long distances to attend the nearest campus classes available to them.

As with campus training, provides the critical training necessary to instruct each student on the best practices for a variety of patient care tasks. From measuring blood pressure and pulse to proper movement of patients, online instruction is an effective alternative to campus classrooms. Most online courses of study are in most respects identical to the type of education that you can receive at a community college or hospital-sponsored course

A Look at Red Cross CNA Training

If you are planning for a career as a certified nursing assistant (CNA) and live in any one of the thirty-six United States cities that offer classes from the American Red Cross, then Red Cross CNA training is an option that you should explore. In fact, Red Cross CNA training ranks among the most highly acclaimed nursing assistant educational opportunities available.

Red Cross CNA training complies with various federal and state requirements, with each of the various training programs throughout the country specifically designed to conform to the unique standards set by each state. These standards vary from state to state, and include such things as the number of study hours and the amount of actual hands-on clinical education that each student receives. From state to state, these requirements vary by as much as 50 hours of training. Course hours are separated into classroom lectures, laboratory practice, and actual training experience in a clinic or hospital setting. In most cases, the Red Cross clinical training is provided in a hospital or nursing home setting.

Red Cross CNA training is provided in classrooms that are designed with hands-on practical experience in mind. Most classes have hospital beds, practice mannequins, a real Hoyer lift, bed pans, wheelchairs, and almost every other piece of equipment the students will need to familiarize themselves with to accomplish the various tasks required of a nursing assistant. These tasks range from  moving patients from a bed to a chair (and vice versa), taking a patient’s pulse and other vital signs, using the lift to move a patient, providing basic hygiene and dental care for a patient, grooming the patient, and assisting with feeding and bathing – to name just a few.

The American Red Cross takes great pride in the fact that Red Cross CNA training is comprehensive and very fast-paced. Whereas most nursing assistant courses entail six or more months of study, the Red Cross CNA training program is so involved that its students typically graduate, get certified, and join the health care workforce in less than two months from the start of training. Red Cross CNA training recipients can be found throughout the country in some of the finest hospitals, nursing homes, and even home health agencies.

Though you can find many free certified nursing education opportunities, Red Cross CNA training is not among them. Receiving your training from the American Red Cross will cost you

Requirements for CNA Certification

For any individual thinking about a job as a certified nursing assistant (CNA), getting the requisite training is a process that can take many forms. From community college and other campus training to free hospital-provided CNA training to web based classes, learning the skill sets necessary to become qualified as a certified nursing assistant can be quite a highly personalised path. Completing the courses required to become a CNA, however, is not the end of the journey for those pursuing this career path. To be fully qualified as a certified nursing assistant, every student must first fulfill the requirements of CNA Certification by passing the CNA exams.

The National Nurse Aide Assessment Program (NNAAP) is the primary exam for CNA certification in the United States. More than a million want to be nursing assistants have taken the exam, which is administered in several segments that cover written, oral, and skills testing sections. The written part of the exam involves a series of multiple choice questions that cover a broad spectrum of skills information that CNA candidates are expected to know. The oral section, given in both English and Spanish, consists of 10 basic comprehension questions and several dozen multiple choice problems. The skills testing segment is designed to test an applicant’s ability to perform the tasks required of every CNA. During this part of the test, candidates are provided the opportunity to demonstrate their learned skills in a simulated hospital setting, with both nursing staff and exam officials evaluating performance.

In addition to the NNAAP, there are nearly 250 CNA Certification Programs available to those who have successfully completed the roughly 9 months to a year of certified nursing training that is a prerequisite to most testing. Each of these CNA certification exams have been approved by the American Nurse Association Commission of Nurse Accreditation, and enable successful candidates to receive placement on their state’s nurse aide registry and be eligible for annual renewal of their certification.

Beyond the federal requirements for certified nursing assistants who work in nursing homes and other locales, the states each have their own specifications for certification, with state CNA certification exams usually provided through a State Board of Nursing program. State requirements usually entail that nursing assistants be healthy, drug-free, and without a criminal history. To that end, health screenings and background checks are conducted at the state level to ensure compliance. State CNA certification must be maintained from year to year, with renewal usually being required prior to the last day of December and including updated personal information.

In addition there are, of course, personal requirements needed for CNA certification. While the personal qualities that drive each person seeking a career as a CNA vary from individual to individual, certain qualities are held in common by almost every successful nursing assistant. All are caring individuals with the patience to engage in repetitive activity on a daily basis. In addition, successful nursing assistant candidates should have a strong desire to be a frontline member of the medical team, as many patients receive more visits from CNAs than from physicians and nurses combines.

CNA Training Programs – Finding the Right One for You

Certified nursing assistants (CNAs) are patient care specialists who have been educated to care for the elementary needs of a patient, and who also provide critical assistance to registered nurses in hospital and long-term care settings. Many CNAs work outside of these traditional care facilities by providing home health care to patients who require assistance within their own homes. If you are considering a occupation as a CNA, choosing from among the many available training programs can be a difficult task. This site is dedicated to assiting those seeking a new career as a certified nursing assistant.

Comprehending the requirements for becoming a certified nursing assistant is an essential factor in determining which of the numerous CNA training programs will meet your personal and professional needs. Certified Nursing Assistants require certification from the relevant state to affirm that the CNA has received the necessary training and has met all other qualifications to work as a nursing assistant in that state. Each state has its own regulations regarding CNA training. In addition, there are federal regulations for those who work in hospitals or long term care facilities that are funded by Medicare. Among these federal standards are training requirements that entail a full 91 hours of certified nursing assistant training, as well as 18 hours of hands-on training in a clinical environment.

Free CNA Training – Get Your Education Paid For

The specialized niche for certified nursing assistants is intense and increasing, as the approaching retirement of the Baby Boomer generation is already producing an enhanced demand for these important spokes in the health care wheel. The tremendous increase in popularity for a occupation in the CNA field has resulted in a sharp rise in the number of young people pursuing CNA certification as their first career choice, as well as a growing number of adults who are choosing to leave their old careers behind and start a new life in the health care industry. The existing and future demand for certified nursing assistants has resulted in a rise in the number of low cost and free CNA training possibilities for would-be students.

Free CNA Training programs are offered in a variety of ways and from a variety of sources. The principal means of providing this training is through hospitals, online courses of study, and job training groups and programs in various localities across the country. CNA training involves both courses and classes – with courses consisting of the standard written study material and classes being devoted to a more laboratory based approach to learning that enables students to experience first-hand the requirements of the job.

Hospitals provide you with the bulk of these free CNA training opportunities, and often do so in concert with community colleges in their area. Nursing homes in some areas also offer these courses. In both cases, the advantages of taking a lead role in the training of the next generation of nursing assistants is only too clear: these hospitals and nursing homes are helping to ensure that their future need for CNAs will be met by a sufficient number of qualified nursing assistants. In many cases, this free CNA training is provided in exchange for working for the institution for a period of time after certification is complete.

Local job training agencies and groups also provide free CNA training, sometimes in cooperation with assorted state agencies charged with ensuring the public’s health. Several of these programs correspond with CNA and home health aide scholarship opportunities that are publicly funded. In addition, the Armed Forces of the United States offer a number of educational options for both active duty personnel and – in some cases – their spouses.

As a final point, free CNA training can be found online from numerous schools that offer nursing assistant education. The online experience, however, comes without the clinical experience that students derive from training in a hospital or even community college environment. In most cases, it is advisable for an online student to coordinate his or her study program with the local hospital, clinic, or community college so that access to hands-on training can be obtained.

It is worth noting that many free CNA training programs cover only the classroom and clinical activities required to complete the basic educational requirements for the profession. Aspiring CNAs will still need to pass their state’s respective exams for certification. In most cases, the cost of the certification exam will need to be paid by the graduating student.

How to Get Paid for CNA Training

Though demand for Certified Nursing Assistants is strong and expected to become stronger over time, the gap remains wide between the anticipated number of CNAs hospitals and nursing homes expect to need over the next few decades and the number of people actually training to become CNAs. To narrow the divide, many hospitals and nursing homes have adopted new programs to attract more people to this critical profession, including paying students as they learn the skills they will need in their career. With economic uncertainty worldwide, and lingering high unemployment at home, figuring out is a primary focus for many who aspire to a career in the health care industry.

Many hospitals and long-term care facilities are only too happy to explain to potential students . The incentive for these health care facilities is tremendous, as taking a lead role in educating the next generation of these patient care technicians helps the facilities to ensure that their demand for new health care workers will continue to be met. Like any form of campus training, CNA training provided by a hospital or long term care facility covers the gamut of skills that every nursing assistant is expected to learn

Patient Compliance and Transplantation

ByDeidra C HallDeidra C Hall
Level: Basic

At a very young age, Deidra learned the importance of compliance and living with chronic illness. When she was twelve, Deidra was diagnosed with Nephrotic ... Article Word Count: 738[View Summary]Comments (0)

Hey Patient!

All this month (if you haven't been aware) has been "Donate Life" month. A month out of the year where we set aside time to educate people about the importance of transplantation.

Did you know that over 110,000 people are waiting for a transplant? That's a lot of people. Are you one of them? Are you one, like myself, that has been blessed enough to receive a transplant? If you fall in to either one of these categories, then compliance is an important word to have in your vocabulary.

Compliance - Willingness to follow a prescribed course of treatment.(thefreedictionary.com)

Compliance - Hold on to instruction, do not let it go; guard it well, for it is your life. Proverbs 4:13

Remember that word for three reasons. First, how well you do it will determine if medical professionals are going to trust you with a "gift" such as a transplant. Second, you will certainly need to abide by it so that you can keep that lovely transplanted organ for as long as you possibly can. No one wants to see a good organ go to waste, not the donor (or their family), doctor, and I'm sure, certainly not you. Last, it keeps you alive.

What are you doing now to be compliant?

Let that question roll around in your head a bit. Now is the time to really sit and think about your health habits. Are you eating correctly? Do you take your medication as prescribed? Do you keep your doctor appointments? All of these things (among many others) are so important to think about, pre and post transplant.

So what keeps people from being compliant? I've heard many reasons, but there always seems to be a common thread.

Lack of support and communication is often either said or implied. For those who have been through the transplant process, you know one of the first things they ask are along the lines of "Who will you have to help you?" in other words, do you have an established support system? At first you will need it because with transplantation, you have major surgery. You will need people to drive you to your appointments, help you up and down, in and out, and all around. But, when the pain subsides, you start to heal, and become more independent, you will still need them.

Your support system will be there when you are needing to remember to go to your one-of-many appointments. They will be there to encourage you to take your medicines - even though you feel like a walking medicine cabinet. They will be there to push you to keep exercising and eating healthy - even though you don't feel like it. Yes, support is key to your compliance.

Do you know what else is key? Great communication. You are your best advocate! Never be intimidated to speak up on your behalf, especially if you don't "feel right" and you think something is wrong (no matter how trivial). Ask questions until you fully understand what ever it is you are seeking. If you need to reschedule so that you can have more time to talk, ask to do that. Bring a support person with you that can help you listen and take notes. Don't ever leave your appointment confused. Are the words too big to understand? Say so! You do yourself no service leaving your appointments unsure of what to do. That ultimately leads to noncompliance.

Last, to stay compliant, you must plan, act, re-plan, act, plan, act - wash, rinse, repeat. Planning for the "what if"s will help you overcome successfully if or when they happen. Often times, plans need repeating and reworking, and that's ok. You do what you need to do in order to stay healthy. What will you do if you are on a trip and you forget your meds back at home? Who will help you to remember to get to your 3 appointments you have back to back? - PLAN!

And that's what compliance coaching is all about - support, communication, planning, and living it all out to the fullest. If you need help with your compliance - seek help. Don't sit thinking "I'll do better next time". That line of thinking can lead you right back in the hospital or worse yet, right back on a list. Act now....your life is in your hands.

Scoping Out Medical Bills for Arthroscopic Knee Surgery

ByNicholas NewsadArticle Word Count: 609[View Summary]Comments (0)

The only thing worse than needing knee surgery is getting your medical bill. Knee surgery can be one of the most expensive outpatient surgeries to have. This articles describes medical bill tips that are specific to arthroscopic knee surgery.

1) Site-of-service cost difference

On the cheap end, some insurance companies have negotiated arthroscopic knee surgery prices at ambulatory surgery centers as low as $1,200 for a meniscal repair and $3,400 for an ACL repair. On the expensive end, facility fees for some outpatient hospital departments are as high as $6,000 for a mensical repair and $16,000 for an ACL repair. ACL repairs are more expensive than meniscal repairs because of the human tissue graft used. The human tissue from a cadaver can cost the facility $1,000 or more to acquire for your surgery.

The hospital or ASC may bill your for implantable devices if your physician uses high-end screws or hardware. If you have insurance and the facility is billing you for device costs above and beyond your deductible and coinsurance, call your insurance company and ask if these device costs were "bundled" in the insurance payment to the facility. The vast majority of the time, you should not have to pay separate for devices unless you agreed to do so before hand with your physician. The hospital or surgery center should have not used "patient billable" materials without informing you.

2) Surprise costs

With knee surgery it can be difficult to estimate the price because the surgeon may find unexpected damage that needs to be fixed once he or she gets inside your knee. Ask each provider what the different costs could be if the surgeon finds additional damage and has to do additional procedures.

3) Consider physical therapy benefits and costs

Depending on what type of surgery you have, physical therapy could start the same day. Check you benefit plan to make sure you know how many visits are allowed as well as the coverage rate and copay. For example, you may have anywhere from 10 to 20 allowed physical therapy visits in a year and your copay could be anything from $25 to $65 for each visit. Factor these costs into you budget. If you're experiencing financial hardship, you should explore whether there are any hospital-based physical therapy clinics that may have more charitable billing practices.

If you run out of allowed visits for physical therapy, you can still see the therapist on a cash-basis. Ask the therapist what his or her rate is for self-pay patients.

4) Mitigate need for second surgery

You can avoid paying extra costs after the surgery by reducing your risk of re-injury. There is a risk that if you don't do your physical therapy or if you try to return to athletic activities too quickly that you could need the surgery again. Unfortunately, re-tearing the knee is pretty common, especially among athletes and teenagers that try to return to sports too quickly.

5.) Ask your employer about disability benefits

ACL repairs are expected to begin physical therapy the same day, but if you have a meniscus tear, you could be looking at some serious recovery time. You may be entitled to payments equal to 60%-70% of your salary while you are recovering from surgery and unable to work. This is a great benefit to have if your recovery time from surgery will consume a significant portion of your vacation time or paid-time off. Short- and long-term disability insurance are commercial insurance benefits that you can use to pay bills when you cannot work for medical reasons. AFLAC is an example of short-term disability insurance.
