How Your Metabolism Helps You Burn Fat
Metabolism is a word that gets thrown around a lot when it comes to explaining how to burn fat. But what is metabolism, really, and how does it help you burn fat.
At it's very simplest, metabolism is where a molecule of glucose meets a molecule of oxygen in the mitochondria of your cells. The result is energy that your body uses to function and preform activities.
Glucose is the molecule that is used (for metabolism) but carbohydrates, fats and proteins can all be converted into glucose (potential energy) so your total daily food intake is referred to as a unit of energy. That is, in terms of calories.
Each day you take in a certain amount of food which can be measured in calories.
Likewise, each day your body uses a certain amount of energy in order to keep everything, your organs, your systems, your brain, running and sustain life. The energy produced in each cell by your mitochondria goes to keep your heart beating, your diaphragm pushing down to pull air into your lungs, and out again, your liver, kidneys, and more.
This energy expenditure is known as you basal metabolic rate, or BMR.
There is also the additional expenditure of energy from walking running, lifting, chasing your kids, going up stairs, working out, making love to your spouse, and any other physical exercise.
The energy expenditure of your BMR plus additional exercise can also be measured in calories.
The balance of these two figures, the conversion of food to energy and your body using that energy (your metabolism) determines whether you gain weight or lose weight.

However, you don't need to plan ahead any more than a couple of days and one trip to the supermarket will do it. When I first started the Dukan diet, I went from going to the supermarket every single day on my way home to going two or three times a week. Not having to worry about buying dinner made up for the couple times I did have to go shopping for food.
Don't be tempted to devise one daily Dukan diet menu and just stick to that every day of the Attack phase. If your Attack is only two days long then you might get away with it but if you are planning on four or five days you will soon tire and then get sick of those same old foods.
It's true that this phase is the most restrictive but that does not mean that you can not have variety in your menu during this time. There are so many combination's of ingredients that you can eat something different for every meal of your Attack phase. The secret to making life as easy as possible is to never get bored. Constantly stimulate your body and your mind by eating as many different and new flavours as possible. And coming up with exciting new recipes.

Is it possible to enjoy the Attack Phase of the Dukan diet? I think that it is. If you haven't tried the Dukan diet for yourself then I can understand you being skeptical. In fact, I would not blame you for expecting every phase of the Dukan diet to be, while not desperately unpleasant, something you would not exactly enjoy. For most people, diets and especially the first few days of the diet are pretty unpleasant. The Attack Phase of the Dukan diet takes place during the first few days (you only do this phase once and never lasts more than a week) and so should be the hardest phase. It is called the 'attack' and not the 'relaxing preamble phase' after all!
Before looking more closely at the Attack Phase, I want to take a look at diets in general. People have a tendency to sum up large and complex events into one single experience. The less verbose among us manage to sum things up, no matter how eventful, in a single word or two.
How were the holidays? Good.
What was Francine's wedding like? Fabulous.
How was school today? Rubbish.
What was the journey like? A nightmare!
Of course, if we're asked to expand on the subject we can if we're willing. And, most of us can break things down and accept that some aspects of the day or event were better than others. When what we're doing is warmly anticipated or if we enjoyed the event then we tend to forget or gloss over the bad things and vice-versa. As time goes by, most of us slowly forget the bad and remember events, unless especially tragic or traumatic, as positive experiences. What has this got to do with the Dukan diet and the Attack phase, you may wonder.
Well, when we choose to go on diets (no matter what kind of diet it is, simple calorie counting, the Dukan diet, joining a Weight-Watchers club, the Atkins or only drinking hot water and molasses and cayenne pepper) we have mixed feelings. There is some relief that we're finally doing something about losing the weight we've been worrying about. There is excitement at the thought of losing weight. But there is also fear that the diet plan may not work and all our efforts will be for nothing. Or that we will not be able to stick it out until the end. Finally, there is dread or even sadness, at the thought of not being able to enjoy the foods, treats and snacks we're used to eating and comforting ourselves with.
Most people will take these separate emotions (relief, excitement, fear, dread and sadness) and decide whether or not they are looking forward (or not) to being on their diet and what this experience will be like.
However, diets are complex events. Rather than always remaining one single experience, things are constantly changing. The first few days of a diet are not same as being the fourth or fifth week in. The experience of month one on a diet is not the same as what being on the diet in month three is like. As you progress with your diet, you change.
If I were to ask you how you'd feel if you lost half the weight you needed to what would you say? Suppose you need to lose 30lbs, would you feel any different if you were 15lbs lighter? I think most people would. So if it takes twelve weeks to lose 30lbs, after six weeks you will have lost half the weight. That means that after just over a month you will be feeling different.
What this means is that you can't plan to go on the Dukan diet, work out that it will take you 12 weeks to lose the weight and think: I'm going to spend 12 weeks feeling like... This is because as the weeks go by how you feel, your experiences of the diet, will necessarily change.
What about some of the other emotions. Take relief, for example, you will feel this from day one. You've been worrying about being over weight and wanting to lose some pounds but never got around to it. Each meal, every snack or treat has been accompanied with a sense of guilt that you ought not be eating this.
However, with most diets, this pleasant feeling of relief doesn't last long. This is simply because the sensation of relief is replaced with feeling hungry all the time and craving your old meals, treats and snacks.
The Dukan diet is a low hunger diet. Not only do you feel less hungry than you do on other diets (simply because high-protein diets are more filling) but you actually crave other foods much less often. People say that one of the biggest surprises that they have whilst on the Attack phase (and all the other phases of the Dukan diet) is that they don't feel hungry or really want to eat sugary or fatty foods.
This means that the pleasant feeling of relief that you are finally doing something about your weight, lasts a lot longer.
The other emotions that you feel when on a diet include excitement over losing weight and fear that you may not or can't stick to the plan. The Dukan diet is a fast weight loss diet. In fact during the Attack phase most people lose a lot of weight. This phase only lasts three or four days but this is usually enough for weight loss to be noticeable.
After two weeks of the Dukan diet, by this time you are into the Cruise Phase, you will discover your clothes feeling loser and will probably start receiving positive comments on your weight loss. What great motivation for carrying on going with it!
This means that if you plan on starting the Dukan diet tomorrow, then the next few days, during your Attack Phase, you can expect to feel relief and excitement that you're doing something that works. Of course, all diets are a stressful time. Don't expect it to be all plain-sailing. But expect it to be interesting and possibly even fun.
You can look ahead to 4 weeks from now. After this time most people are noticeably thinner. Clothes are more comfortable and they're hearing positive remarks about their weight loss.
As you progress through the Dukan diet, you pass through different phases. With every new phase, more and more foods are included and your menu becomes more and more varied. On the third phase you are even including Celebration Meals in which you are allowed to eat any foods you like!
The Dukan diet is one of changes. Not only does the diet itself change over time but so does your body and expectations. Due to the lack of hunger and food cravings coupled with the fast weight loss, the diet is high on motivation. This means that the more positive aspects of a weight loss program are emphasized. These positive aspects include: relief that you're finally doing something about your weight and relief that you have found a diet solution that works; excitement that you are losing the pounds and anticipation over finally being the size and shape you want to be.
Knowing and experiencing this, while only in the first few days of the Dukan diet, means that, yes, it is possible to enjoy the Attack Phase.

So, for example, if you were on a treadmill in a gym you would sprint for 45 seconds, then jog slowly for 45 seconds, then sprint for 45 seconds, and so on.
Interval training is a lot more effective for fat loss, takes less time than normal cardio, and keeps your metabolism high for the rest of the day.
2. Reduce your calories
You need to be in a calorie deficit each day in order to lose weight. Calculate your BMR (basal metabolic rate), and attempt to keep your daily intake of calories as close to this figure as possible.
And remember - you should be eating complex carbohydrates, lean proteins, and healthy fats. Get rid of all of the excess sugars, fried foods and other junk foods. You are not going to get a toned mid-section if you are drinking Coke and eating Hershey bars.
3. Perform exercises which focus on your core.
Please, please, please DON'T do sit ups or crunches. THEY ARE A COMPLETE WASTE OF TIME.
Instead, perform exercises such as the plank, V-Sits, the stomach vacuum, and leg raises. These exercises will work your entire abdominal area and will tone and sculpt all of your mid-section.
4. Stay consistent
So you are now exercising for fat loss, eating correctly and performing targeted resistance movements. You are doing well. Now, keep it up.
You are not going to see results overnight. So stay consistent You WILL start to see improvements, but just not immediately. Stick to your exercise routine and maintain a calorie deficit each day. You will slowly get there.
If it helps, get a workout planner and plan each weeks exercise routines. Keep a food diary and note down everything you eat each day. This may take an additional amount of effort, but you will then know you are on track.

Low Carb Salad Dressing for Low Carbohydrate Diets
There were a number of low carb salad dressings on the market a few months ago but they are becoming more and more scarce. Even the ones that say they are reduced sugar or low calorie are usually too high in carbs for a true low carbohydrate diet.
There are several products readily available on the market today that do qualify as reduced carb salad dressings. The Good Seasons and the Hannaford dressings are good examples. Both of these products require you to mix olive oil and vinegar with the contents of a dressing packet and the Good Seasons product even gives you a nice carafe bottle to mix them in.
There are other options as well. Most mustards have little or no carbs and most mayonnaise products are zero carb. There are a number of reduced carbohydrate ketchups on the market and many relish products including sweet relishes have no sugar added and are reduced carbohydrate products. Tabasco and many other hot sauces have zero carbs and there are some powdered spice mixes that are also low or no carb products.
We make a creamy thousand island dressing using mayonnaise, no sugar added sweet relish and reduced carb ketchup.
The ketchup has one carb per tablespoon and the sweet relish has one carb per tablespoon so the net result of the mix of these three is a truly low carb dressing. Of course we don't stop there. We often add spice mix products to our main ingredients to "kick-it-up" a little. We make a Cajun kind of Thousand Island dressing and it is absolutely delicious.
The salad itself consists of Iceberg Lettuce, some celery, sliced cucumbers mixed with a little baby spinach. I mix a handful of the colorful bag salads from the grocery store in just to give it a little color and varying texture. The main ingredient in my salad is the Iceberg Lettuce.
My relatives laugh at my use of Iceberg lettuce and are quick to inform me that Ice Berg Lettuce has very little nutritional value. I smile and agree with them because that is exactly why I love the stuff. It fills you up and has no usable food value. What a wonderful diet product.
My only caution with all salad items is that you be sure to wash them thoroughly. We use a few drops of a food disinfectant product in the rinse water but a teaspoon or two of white vinegar would work just as well. Just be sure to rinse and dry off the excess water from the items before adding them to your salad.
Some of the other things we add to our salad are hardboiled egg slices, sliced of California avocados and sometimes a little tuna or canned chicken. Be sure to only use the California avocados, the dark green bumpy ones, and not the Florida avocados, which are lighter in color and smooth skinned. The California avocados are lower in carb and go better in a green salad.
Salads are the mainstay of a reduced carbohydrate diet and with a little experimentation you can mix your own excellent salad dressings from readily available grocery products. Some days my main meal is just a large salad with different meats like chicken tuna or even ham. It satisfies my hunger and helps me reach my goal of weight loss using a low carb diet.

Thoughts on Losing Weight
Hello everyone out there who, like me, is not happy with the body you're living with. My enemy number one is that dratted mirror. It keeps reminding me of what I'm not.
I decided not to risk seven years bad luck by smashing it and now I throw comments like ---"just you wait till I'm done" and "who do you think you are, anyway?" at it.
Everyone needs a non-critical, non-judgmental companion to share the weight loss journey and I chose Baggies. She doesn't scold me when I fall off the wagon and indulge in a really tasty forbidden morsel or get upset when I rant and rave about what I can't eat, she just cuddles up and purrs.
Baggies is a rescue cat, who spent the first few years of her life on the street before coming to live with me. Needless to say she was thoroughly spoilt and consumed EVERYTHING she could get her teeth into, both given and stolen. She's a past master at nicking bits and pieces here and there which has resulted in a waistline that is a sight to behold.
I've decided that we both need slinky, sexy bodies that all self- respecting felines, and humans deserve.
The gurus tell us that our state of mind is all important, well ------my mind is saying "I want what I want when I want it and I want it NOW"--- Oops! That's hasn't worked. Unfortunately magic wands are confined to the pages of fairy tales.
I'm not crazy about embarking on yet another diet. I know that route all too well. It's wonderful for a while and the weight comes off but all too often these diets are difficult to sustain and the cheating starts ------then we know what happens. I'm wondering if we can do this on our own. Here are a few ideas that might be useful.
I decided that smaller portions on the plate at every meal, is a good starting place. This is not too painful especially if you have a large glass of water before a meal. This tends to make you feel full and not so inclined to want to eat as much as you would usually. This was not too painful although I must say Baggies can't quite get the hang of the large glass of water.
Snacking in between meals is a no-no and I'm trying really hard to chew on a carrot when I feel the urge. Baggies is okay here as she can't open the kitty food or the fridge.
So here we are eating smaller portions and I've been told that exercise is important-----Horrors!!! There are so many exercise programs out there that I'm totally confused so I've decided to walk a little every day.
Now I feel this is enough for the moment. There's no point on embarking on a huge program that's impossible to sustain. After all we only have one life so why be completely miserable?
So where are we? We're taking smaller portions, not snacking between meals and walking a little. Baggies can't handle the walking bit. She doesn't respond to "Come, Baggies, walkies". Never mind maybe I can find a little mouse for her to chase.
One other thing that has just struck me, perhaps we should try to be aware of WHAT we're eating. Now let's not go overboard here but I think we should try and cut down on the extra sweet stuff as well as the fried spicy stuff. Note I said cut down not cut out, we don't want to suffer gut wrenching cravings. I think we should realize that we can make different choices and that it's possible to educate that little part of our brain that says "yummy" when we see those goodies.

HCG Diet Updated for 2011: New Pounds and Inches
The HCG diet has caught the attention of most overweight Americans as it promises to help the dieter lose a pound a day without hunger or cravings and without a minute of exercise! The HCG diet was conceived in 1950, by Dr. A.T. Simeons, who wrote in his booklet, Pounds and Inches, that injecting HCG, a hormone produced normally by pregnant women, could end hunger, produce spectacular weight loss results without exercise, and at the same time "re-set" the metabolism centers in the brain permanently. Dr. Simeons published his findings in the prestigious English medical journal, Lancet, however the reports were only "letters to the editor," not peer reviewed medical studies. He wrote and then self published the short booklet, Pounds and Inches which again was simply a report of his observations treating his patients with HCG.
Although many of Dr. Simeons' observations have proven to be true, and equal number have proven to be false and even a few dangerous. The New Pounds and Inches, updates and revises Simeons' 1954 plan using modern-day science and current experience. Here is the Simeons HCG plan updated for 2011:
800 Calories a Day
Dr. Simeons wrote that the total daily calories should not exceed 500 calories and consist of 200 grams of protein, some vegetables, salad and two fruits and a Melba toast. Hundreds of weight loss studies with what are called Very Low Calorie Diets have been completed over the past 20 years. They show no difference in weight loss between eating 500 or 800 calories a day. In fact, more weight loss and protein sparing has been found at the 800 calorie level. In addition, adding 200-300 calories per day, especially in the form of lean protein for breakfast and a little more protein at the evening meal makes a lot of sense.
Lean Protein and Fruit for Breakfast
Dr. Simeons wrote that breakfast should consist of tea or coffee in any quantity, a bread-stick or an apple. This appeals to many overweight people who make a habit of skipping breakfast completely. Many researchers believe skipping breakfast may be one of the fundamental reasons for the increase in obesity since Dr. Simeons' time. Breakfast should never be skipped and include as much low fat protein as possible.
More Lean Protein for Lunch and Dinner
100 grams of lean protein, with a handful of vegetables and an orange or a few strawberries is Dr. Simeons' plan for lunch and dinner. Unfortunately, since Dr Simeons' time, much as changed in family life. Most women are working and in some families the father has two jobs. There is little time to clean, weigh and prepare 100 grams of protein In addition, although most individuals might be happy with this tiny lunch, they may need more for dinner.
Three Fruits per Day and Unlimited Vegetables
Dr. Simeons' protocol allowed for an apple, an orange, handful of strawberries or grapefruit. The recent low carb craze and the development of the glycemic index has revealed that many more fruits and vegetables may be appropriate. In addition, alternating vegetables or fruits suggested by Dr Simeons or limiting such almost zero calorie foods as lettuce and celery makes little sense.
Unlimited zero calorie, zero fat drinks
In Pounds and Inches, Dr. Simeons wrote that tea, coffee, plain water or mineral water are the only drinks allowed. He added that saccharin or other sweeteners may be used. Does this mean that other artificially sweetened drinks and foods are disallowed or does it reflect the fact that few artificial sweeteners were available in the 1950-60's when Dr. Simeons did his research? There is an intense debate about the usefulness of artificial sweeteners. Suffice it to say, for most overweight people and especially diabetics this author has found them useful, safe and effective. Since Dr. Simeons approved of Saccharin and Stevia, might he have approved of Aspartame (Nutria-sweet, Equal) and Sucralose (Splenda)?
Eliminate the "Binging: and Overeating in the First Few Days
Dr. Simeons wrote in Pounds and Inches that patients must eat to capacity for about one week before starting treatment, regardless of how much they weigh. Gorging for at least two days is the cornerstone of Dr. Simeons' plan. Telling individual struggling with their weight and compulsive eating to go out and eat as much fatty food as they are able is at first very appealing but there is absolutely no proof that it leads to more weight loss or less hunger. Numerous very low calorie diet plans have been used in the past twenty years. Not one as advocated such "bingeng" as a technique to increase weight loss. All the recent research of fat cells in overweight individuals indicate there are already "filled" and "well stocked" due to years of overeating. Attempting to add more fat to them as advocated by Dr. Simeons even, if that were even possible, seems to be unnecessary to this author.
Six Week Treatment Plans and Lack of Immunity to HCG
None of Dr. Simeons' complicated treatment plans and artificial limitations are necessary. Do people taking HCG administered intramuscularly (as Dr. Simeons insists it be done) really get immune to the hormone or is HCG no different than insulin, growth hormone and numerous other naturally occurring hormones where no significant immunity is seen even after years of treatment? Was the immunity Dr. Simeons thought he observed due to the fact that he used injections of HCG rather than the orally administered hormone? It's well known that taking a medication orally is much less likely to produce anti-bodies than taking it by injection. Was the HCG "immunity" Dr. Simeons saw due to the relative impurity in his HCG preparations as compared to current day HCG? The answers to all of these questions will never be really known. Here are better explanations for the slow down in weight loss Dr. Simeons observed and interpreted as "immunity" to HCG: 1. Normal response to weight loss is to slow metabolism to prevent further weight loss. Slow downs are seen in every diet. 2. Weight loss is proportional to what a person weighs. So after a lot of weight loss one would expect a slow down in the rate of weight loss in each individual. 3. Dr. Simeons' HCG food plan is limiting and boring. People naturally start cheating which causes the apparent slowdown. All of these explanations may play a role in the slow down in weight loss of the Simeons' HCG diet in the past. If a person is doing well on the diet, then there are no reasons to stop, as long as the dieter is taking vitamin and mineral replacements.
Thyroid Hormone Medication
Dr. Simeons plan states very emphatically that it never allows the dieter to take his thyroid replacement medications during the diet phase because the thyroid function becomes normal with HCG. The evidence for this is not presented and this author does not believe it's possible. Patients that are on thyroid replacement therapy should not stop taking their medications, contrary to what Dr. Simeons wrote.
Other Medications
Dr. Simeons wrote that no medications should be taken during the diet phase of the HCG plan. I hope the beginning dieter will never follow this bad advice about stopping all medications. It's simply baseless, often dangerous and certainly not necessary.
Vitamin and Mineral Supplements
Dr. Simeons in Pounds and Inches wrote that vitamin and mineral replacements are not needed, even on a 500 calorie diet. That might have been true in 1950 when foods and drinks were less processed, but certainly not today.
Cosmetics Do Not Stop Weight Loss
In Pounds and Inches, Dr. Simeons spends a great deal of time condemning cosmetics as interfering with weight loss. He wrote (in 1950) that cosmetics contain hormones, which interfere with endocrine regulations. Endocrine active substances or hormonally active substances are chemicals that may alter the function of the endocrine system. A variety of chemicals have been found to disrupt the endocrine system in studies of laboratory animals at very high doses and in some populations of fish and wildlife. However, the FDA has found no evidence that ingredients used in current day cosmetic and personal care products cause endocrine disruption or alter metabolism in humans. There is no logical reason to restrict current day cosmetics in the HCG plan.
HCG Can Be Taken Effectively Orally As Well As by Injection
In Pounds and Inches, Dr. Simeons explains that his HCG can be given only by injection which must be prepared every 2 days. There are few current proponents of the Simeons Protocol that call for the HCG to prepared every few days and even fewer that require an injection deep into the buttocks. In addition, many studies have found equal effectiveness comparing oral to injectable HCG.
Menstruation
The HCG can be started at any time in a women's cycle and does not have to be stopped during menstruation. HCG is a pregnancy hormone and should not be confused with the "real" gonadotrophins-FSH and LH which are made in the pituitary gland and regulate ovulation and menstrual cycles.
Many of the concepts about the use of HCG in weight loss that Dr. Simeons wrote 55 years ago in Pounds and Inches have passed the test of time. This includes remarkable weight loss, lack of hunger and preferential weight loss from around the belly. However, as presented in the New Pounds and Inches, many of Dr Simeons' techniques have become outdated and some have been proven false. The New Pounds and Inches offers a safe, effective plan for weight loss without feelings of deprivation not available to Dr. Simeons in the past. Many new foods and beverages are introduced making the plan interesting and less boring.

Actually I will go one step further and say we stop thinking Diets.
The majority of people these days are well educated enough to say - Diets don't work so I'm not going on another one, however we haven't fixed our programming around the food we are eating and the things we are saying.
You see unless we actually stop sounding like we are on a diet then our body and mind will still think and act like we are on one.
For example:
You're at work and the cakes and biscuits come out - you are a NEW healthy eating person (notice I didn't say on a diet) and everyone else is trying to encourage you to have something to eat. You know you don't want to say anything but someone else might say those dreaded words..
"Oh you're not on a diet are you?" - "Go on have one!"
Or you say,
"None for me thanks I'm on a diet" - or worse "I'm being Good today"
This type of statement sends shock waves through your sub conscious and almost rings a big bell to your body saying Diet, diet, diet and the little rebellious child inside all of us wants to start playing up if it hears you talking about 'being good' for too many days in a row.
Either way you have this underlying feeling of 'missing out'
Once you have done this long enough you will feel the need to be rewarded for your good behavior and most likely end up eating a whole packet of biscuits or the other scenario is if something bad happens, like a bad day at work or fight with your partner or a teenager drives you mad - your rebellious child kicks in and say right, stuff this I'm being 'Bad' too and sit down with a tub of ice cream.
Sound familiar?
This might be sounding a little dramatic with examples but between my own experience and that of my clients I have heard these scenarios played out many times.
Even after all these years I just tried a Diet last month (latest fad thing) 25 days guaranteed to cut you down to a twig. It included fasting, bingeing and a day of pure shakes only. Sounds like a blast right. Well it worked.
Of course!
But the problem is not the dieting, it's the coming off the diet part that sucks.
All of that GOOD behavior eating, of course I spent a week afterwards rewarding myself by eating anything that was considered food, feeling sick and horrible and guilty as hell.
I realized once and for all that it's not the diet that doesn't work it's the Normal that doesn't work.
If we want to make our weight loss permanent we need to make the focus of being healthy, permanent.
Believe in ourselves that we CAN make healthy choices on a daily basis and sometimes having the odd not so healthy choice of food.
This provides a healthy mind first which then creates the healthy body.
Stop thinking in terms of behavior such as GOOD and BAD - we don't need to be punished and we don't need food as a reward.
Avoid the diet Speak - the choices you are making are for the health of your body not for a stop start dieting program.
Keep you focus on being healthy not losing weight because then it's continuous, just think of losing weight as a symptom of being healthy.
If someone offers us cake we can either say no thanks I don't feel like cake today or eat it whole heartedly and believe and trust in yourself that you can either choose to work it off later or make the right choices another time without having to eat the whole cake as a reward.
You can do it I know you can...
We were all put on this earth with the ability to take care of ourselves without the pocket calorie counter at birth.
