Ten Tips For Increasing the Life of Your Arcade Video Game

Hi! After more than 25 years in the arcade video game business, I have seen just about every possible video game maintenance and handling mistake.

Here then are ten tips to help you prevent the more common mistakes, and thereby increase the life of your arcade video game:

1. Back door.

Unless you have small children, pets, or rodents, remove the cabinet's back door to dramatically improve air circulation. Heat is the number one enemy of a games' electronic components - monitor, power supply, circuit board, and isolation transformer.

2. Rodents.

If you have mice, set traps inside your game. The little guys will destroy your game in no time. They eat wiring insulation (very unsafe), they build nests of trash (very unsafe), and they ruin electronic components (very expensive).

3. Heat.

Another way to improve air circulation is to set a fan(s) inside your game. Direct the air flow towards the printed circuit board and monitor. This will really help to extend the life of your game.

4. Surge Protector.

If you have one, use it. If you don't have one, get one. Who knows when lightening will strike. The surge could cook your printed circuit board.

5. Backlight.

The backlight (fluorescent or incandescent) which illuminates your game's marquee is full of potential hazards. First, either type will eventually ruin (burn up) your marquee. Next, if the fluorescent bulb begins to flicker, it can interfere with the play of your game. And lastly, if the transformer blows, it can blow your cabinet's power fuse. Just disconnect the power to the backlight, and save the headaches.

6. Vacuum.

Every so often, you should vacuum the insides - monitor, power supply, printed circuit board - of your game. Electronic components attract dust. Dust acts as an insulation barrier that traps heat. The resulting intensified heat shortens the life of the electronic component. Just make sure you kill the power to your game before you begin cleaning.

7. Freeplay.

Set your game to freeplay. There are two big benefits. First, to get game credits, you are no longer having to find a little coin door switch. And second, the coin door is closed (preferably locked), thus preventing the possibility of someone getting electrocuted (the monitor neck board is often close and inline with the coin door).

8. Blown Fuse.

When your game blows one of the cabinet fuses, don't replace the fuse hoping all will be okay. The fuse blows because an electronic component has failed (shorted). If you replace the fuse, two bad things could happen. The failed components' circuit could be further damaged. And, you could start a fire. So, better to call someone to service your game.

9. Static.

Static discharge could ruin your printed circuit board. So, be sure to discharge yourself before touching any printed circuit board. Also, a discharge to the metal coin door can cause some games to reset. If this is happening, you may need to place an anti-static mat in front of your game.

10. Cabinet Leg Levelers.

Be sure to install the cabinet leg levelers. First, they are used to level your cabinet, and prevent its rocking. But more importantly, they elevate the cabinet enough to prevent water damage (spills, condensation) to its base.

So, you are new to the flash market and finally finished your game after countless hours of coding, designing, and testing (over and over). Now you that think you are ready to let the whole world see your super crazy awesome game. The only problem is, how do you get your game in front of as many people as possible? Well this is the tough part but a number of steps can help you toward your goal.

Many people think that their game is done, and in the developer's eyes the game is absolutely perfect (or close to it). But ask yourself, if you are relatively new to flash games and don't have the time to read the instructions, or just don't want to like many of us are guilty of, can you easily get into the game and figure it out. Like sometimes when I play a game I just jump right into the game and nothing happens so I start clicking on random keys to see what happens, and if it takes more then a few seconds of clicking then I exit, it's true. So it really helps to start off the game slow and have instructions in game, or have some elements of the game introduced a little at a time.

One of the biggest reason I see a fantastic game fall through the cracks, and I am guilty of this, is lack of testing. You should test, and test, and test, until you don't think you can test anymore, then test again. People really do get mad if they think they have found a sweet game then find out there is a huge bug that totally ruins the game, don't let this happen. It is the NUMBER ONE reason for a good game failing according to me:) no but seriously.. don't let it happen. Have your friends, or even family try it out, you will be surprised what kind of bugs they can find

Alright now your game is somewhat decent, fun, bugless, and ready to go. But where to show it off? Well this is personally my plan of attack, and it seems to work pretty well because most of the games get well above 1 million plays, a couple of mine are at 20 million plays. First, I submit it to Kong, it's a respectable site that will get you some decent comments on what should be improved, just ignore the hateful comments, EVERYONE gets them. It's also a good idea to start out on Kong because you can select the exclusive to Kong check mark and get some extra revenue share. Wait maybe a day or two and read all the comments and perhaps add in some features requested by a lot of people. Little things can make a big difference.

Now it's time to really get it out there, unselect the Kong exclusive thing because we are about to put it on more sites. These are some of the main ones I recommend submitting to in no order:

If you have a really great game distribution really will come by itself. This is really viral distribution and it's what every developer once. If this happens to you then you are in there.

REMEMBER, the sites I listed are not all of them, they are just a few good ones, if you really want to maximize your plays send an email to every Flash Portal you can and try to get your game on their site. Every little play counts.

Using the Element of Surprise to Your Advantage in World of Warcraft

Rogues can use the element of surprise better than any class of course. To get an easy player vs. player kill a rogue's abilities are ideal. But if you are not a rogue you'll need a little more creativity while trying to surprise the other player. Take a look at these strategies which can get you the pvp kill even if you are out geared.

1. Drop out of the sky at the right time. I like to wait until another player just pulled a mob to make my move. They are engaged already with a mob so you drop out of the sky from behind(most players rarely look up so stay bit above them) and bam...they are half dead before they even realize you are there.

2. When a player is eating or drinking it's a great time because that means they are not full life or full mana and you have a serious advantage.

3. When someone just resurrects they are low life and low mana it is a great time to get them. I like to stay way above and wait until their corpse turns to bones so I know they rezed and then look for them and kill them again.

4. When the opposite faction is dueling it is a huge surprise to pop in a kill both of them. I like to wait until the duel is over or nearly over so you know all or most of their cool downs are used up so you can easy wipe the floor with them.

5. Low level opposite faction zones. I like riding through those low level contested zones and killing any lowbies I see. Trust me they are surprised to see you there and will run like heck to try and stay alive. I like to kill them at least two times, this way they will go get the mains. I mean let's face it 1 gank is OK but 2 is just 2 much to handle. Just leave after the second gank if you don't want to deal with the main character.

6. This last one is just for rogues for the most part but I have seen others pull it off as well. You just have hide in the bushes or behind stuff. Mail box camping is by far the funniest thing ever. You wait near opposite faction town mailbox and wait for someone to check their mail...and Wham. You can take them out, 90% of the time, before they can even exit the mail.

Timing is everything whenever with any of these strategies. Using the element of surprise to your advantage isn't just for rogues.

Raiding Onyxia's Lair

Onyxia's Lair was redesigned from the 40 man level 60 raid it used to be to a new 10 and 25 man instance for level 80's in Wrath of the Lich King.

Along with this redesign came newer gear. In a 10 man Onyxia the gear item levels will be 232 and in a 25 man Onyxia the gear item levels will be item level 245. This is an exact match of regular 10 man and 25 man Trial of the Crusader.

Although the loot is new and the encounter levels have changed, the actual encounter has basically not. There are three phases during the fight:

Phase 1: Ground
Phase 2: Air, whelps come out of sides
Phase 3: Ground, crazy AoE Fear

At any given time if someone runs into the sides where the whelp eggs are, they will bring with them a ton of whelps and probably get kicked out of the raid. Since AoE damage has been normalized AoE'ing the whelps is not quite as great of the DPS as it used to be but there are people who will spike as high as 12k dps or more during the whelp stages.

Most of what you'll be getting for loot will be class specific heads and a few randomized weapons. The Head of Onyxia is usable by all classes and starts a quest that can be exchanged for a few things, an agility based neck, a defense based trinket, or a caster ring.

Unfortunately, due to the recent Icecrown Citadel Patches and Ruby Sanctum it is very rare to find a pick up group that is going to do Onyxia as the setup time and fail rate of players is very high making the rewards not worth the risk and time.

Raiding Trial of the Crusader

Trial of the Crusader has 4 modes: 10 man regular, 10 man heroic, 25 man regular, and 25 man heroic.

Pick up groups usually go for 10 and 25 man TOC regulars all the time depending on the population of your server, the Heroics are almost rarely seen, but may pick up in frequency now that harder content has been released allowing players to have over rated gear to go back and down the Heroic versions more easily.

There are over 100 epic drops from each mode and a total of 7-8 times that loot will drop off either bosses or chests depending on the mode and accomplishments.

The first fight is the Northrend Beasts where you have to basically fight 3 raid bosses in a row back to back without any breaks. It starts off with Gormok the Impaler, moves on to Acidmaw and Dreascale, then the final fight is against Icehowl and after you kill him then you get your first set of loot.

The next fight is against Lord Jarraxxus who will summon demons and minions throughout the fight and do a bunch of other nasty things, killing him will net loot.

The third fight is against the Faction Champions, it's basically a pvp match, fighting as many as 10 other NPC classes at a time the various skills and strategy is necessary for this one as there will be healers involved. Defeating the faction champs will net loot.

The 4th fight is against Fjola and Eydis the Twin Valkyr. After killing each of them they both will have some loot on them as they each have their own loot table.

The last fight will be against Anub'arak which is where most pick up groups will wipe either because of not dropping ice on the ground or adds. This will complete the raid and net you loot.

On heroic mode there is also tribute chests that can be earned with additional loot.
