Before doctors can give their diagnosis and prescriptions to their patients, it is important to thoroughly check their health. To do this better, doctors are aided by medical equipment and devices that will give them better readings thus accurate diagnosis and medications. One of the devices that aid doctors is pulse oximeter.
Pulse oximeter is a small device attached on the finger that will monitor, detect, and assess changes in the oxygen saturation of the blood in a faster time. The pulse oximeter reading is accompanied by the percentage of the oxygen a person is breathing in, respiratory rate, and pulse rate.
Before, pulse oximetry is invasive. A blood sample from the artery should be taken and it takes a lot of time for the process to be complete. This is very unreliable since lack of oxygen in a person's body within 5 minutes can cause brain damage and other complications. With the modern day oximeters, readings can be done in a matter of seconds.
Medics are the people who normally perform the measurement of blood oxygenation. The accepted level of oxygen in the body is from 95 to 100 percent. However, in some cases, a 90 percent oxygen level is still acceptable. This will normally differ on some factors like the makeup of a person's body.
Today, there are two basic types of pulse oximeters. The first one is the portable pulse oximeter, which is a smaller device. It has simpler instructions to use and is very handy it can be kept on your pocket.
The other type is the handheld and tabletop oximeters. These oximeters are widely used in hospitals. They are bigger and heavier than finger oximeters because aside from the clip-on device, it is also connected to a cable that is then connected on a monitor. Not only does the device monitor the blood oxygen level, it also measures other important things on a person's body. They have more features and are relatively more expensive than the for-home use.
Pulse oximeter readings are also needed for patients who have hypoxia. Hypoxia's severity can be determined from mild, moderate, and severe hypoxia. Mild to moderate hypoxia will normally yield 90 to 95 percent of oxygen saturation; moderate to severe hypoxia is from 80 to 90 percent; and sever hypoxia are readings below 70 percent.
Today, there is also an oximeter specifically designed for children. They are called pediatric pulse oximeter and give more accurate results for children because the oximeter perfectly fits on a child's finger. If the oximeter does not fit, then it may not work or give inaccurate readings.
