How to Find the Right Weight Loss Program for You

1 Article

I was an athlete most of my life and kept up with competitive swimming through college. Like most of us encounter in our 20s, once the training ended and I started working an office job, my figure went south fairly quickly. On top of that, I was still eating a high-carb diet and drinking alcohol on the weekends. My metabolism began to slow down, as did my energy, and I became more lethargic and lost motivation. I decided it was time to motivate and take control of my life again.

Losing weight is an ongoing battle that many of us face numerous times a year. For the last decade, I have tried DVDs, dieting, exercise, books, you name it. Many of these products were too rigorous, not rigorous enough or just plain ridiculous. What I have finally discovered is that everyone's weight loss program should be unique to them. We are all built differently and we all react to exercise in different ways. Some people are able to build lean muscle quickly and benefit from circuit training. Others have more endurance and excel at cross training. Learning what works best for you is half the battle and will decide what type of diet you need to incorporate with your exercise regimen.

As we all know, weight loss programs can be cumbersome and difficult to follow. Sometimes, you will miss a day and then another and then decide to take some time off to "regroup". Usually, this means a few more weeks of procrastinating before starting up again. The problem with this cycle is that you are in a perpetual state of soreness and fatigue. Getting through the first month is so important because your body starts to adjust to the routine, provides you with additional energy during the day and reacts positively to your workout rather than fighting it. Once the second, third and fourth month come, you will look forward to your workout rather than fearing it.

Now, I am sure this all sounds great and you are probably thinking, "which program is best for me?". I cannot answer that for you but I can tell you that you should find one that is best suited to your skill set (as I mentioned above). I personally prefer a high cardio workout with a weight training component and a small stretching/yoga session for flexibility. Diet is extremely important as well and should consist of low carbs (not no carbs) fruits, veges and a lot of lean protein, i.e. fish, chicken, tofu, beans.

Good luck getting your body back!
